Pair of Silver Lake area sex crimes under investigation

Reported sex crimes are relatively rare in Silver Lake. But last week, two were reported on the same day only blocks apart in the southwestern corner of the neighborhood, according to  information provided by Crimemapping.com.  The two crimes – one near the Hollywood Freeway at Vendome and Dillon streets and the second near the 4200 block of Burns Avenue – on Thursday, August 4 were not connected and the victims were familiar with the suspects, according to police.  Lt. Wes Buhrmester with the LAPD Rampart Divison provided the following information about both incidents:

Vendome & Dillon

On August 4, 2011, at 6:15 pm, officers responded to the 300 blk. Vendome St. regarding a sexual assault investigation.  They contacted the victim, who advised following:  a few days prior, the victim had seen the suspect, a male Hispanic, black hair, brown eyes, 5-5, 150 pounds, 30-35 years old, and struck up a conversation with him.  He never mentioned his name.  She invited him to her home, and the two conversed.

On August 4, 2011, at 6:00 pm, she saw the suspect walking down the street, and again engaged him in conversation.  He invited her to his place, but she declined.  The two walked to Vendome and Dillon Streets, and she followed him through some foliage to an apparent homeless encampment, where he told her he lived. The suspect offered the victim $10 to have sex with him, an offer she refused.  He grabbed her pants and tried to pull them down.  The victim resisted, and was punched in the head several times.  She was able to make her escape and call the police.

Several units responded and checked the encampment and the area surrounding it, but could not find the suspect.  The victim was treated for a bloody nose and head trauma by paramedics, but was not transported.  Detectives will interview her to obtain a composite drawing.
4200 block of Burns Avenue
On August 5, 2011, at 2:55 pm, officers responded to the 4200 blk. of Burns Ave. regarding an acquaintance rape.  The victim advised that on the previous evening at 7:30 pm, she had a party at her house, and among the invitees was the suspect, a male White, brown hair, unknown color eyes, 6-0, 205 pounds, 21 years old. At about 9:30 pm, all guests had left except for one of the victim’s friends.

Sometime between 10:30 pm and 3:00 am, she was asleep when she felt a sex act being performed on her.  She thought at first it was her boyfriend, then realized it was not, and it was the suspect.  She screamed at him, and he stopped.  The suspect was then escorted from the apartment by the aforementioned friend of the victim.  The suspect later spoke to another friend of the victim’s, and reportedly made incriminating statements.  The suspect is out of town at this time.

Officers checked a location where the suspect possibly could be found, but he was not there. The victim suffered no injury requiring hospitalization, but was given a sexual assault examination at the hospital.  Detectives will follow-up with the victim.

  1. Wow both incidents are bizzare!

  2. Will that encampment be moving into that newly renovated apartments at Sunset and Vendome?

  3. “she followed him through some foliage to an apparent homeless encampment, where he told her he lived.” Clearly this woman has no common sense.
