Police and burglary suspect return to Angeleno Heights*

Police block off West Kensington at Douglas/Photo by Dave Rottenberg

For the second time this week, police have closed off streets in Angeleno Heights and an LAPD helicopter is hovering overhead as officers search this morning for a burglary suspect who eluded them two days ago. This morning’s search began after 10 a.m. when detectives spotted the man — described as a light-complexioned, male Latino with no shirt and black shorts  – who is believed to live in the area, said Lt. Wes Buhrmester with the Rampart Division.  “We think he’s contained within someone’s backyard,” Buhrmester said.

Residents should call 911 if they see him. A police canine unit is on the way to assist in the search.

Last night, a helicopter hovered over Angeleno Heights during another police search. One resident was told it involved a burglary suspect but Buhrmester had no details about that incident.

Update: The suspect was apprehended shortly before 1 p.m. near Sunset Boulevard and Laveta Terrace, said  Buhrmester. He provided more details about the suspect:

Arrested was Joseph Gutierrez, 34, Los Angeles. He was booked at our Metropolitan Detention Center for burglary, due to a crime reported at 12:15 am on September 28, 2011. He was chased two times prior to today, thus the conflicting reports of his being in custody. He is also being investigated for up to four other break-ins in the Sunset Blvd. area in the last week or so. He is not known to have hurt anyone, and is believed to be involved only in property crimes.

  1. Assuming this excessive police effort is necessary out of general optimism, but something tells me it must be more than a local hooligan creeping in back yards to justify this being a reoccurring situation.

  2. tough to understand the timing of this article/post when there’s no time stamp of the posting (date stamp, yes – but no time stamp) – but yet the article says “This morning’s search began about 90 minutes ago…..”
so was this at 5 AM ? or 1130 AM? — when did the search begin?

  3. The helicopter noise is killing me. Please make it stop!
Please hurry up and catch this guy, and don’t waste our tax money by just flying around in the sky.

  4. m rite nfront of the action they went in wit the k9 n 4 officers about 10mins ago so far nothing………….

  5. And as of 12:30pm, the helicopter is still hovering. I hate the buzzing of the helicopter, but I love that ESLA will tell me why it’s there.

  6. and i can’t get out

  7. Was close to 10am..

  8. Helicopter just left. Possibly this guy was captured?

I feel like if the LAPD would just hang out in Memorial Grove between Lilac Terrace and Elysian Park Drive they would catch about 90% of these guys.

  9. also stuck in my hous

I can’t get out either. This sucks and I am late for an appointment because of this ridiculousness.

  10. Neighbor said the cops saw someone jump a fence between Allison and Kensington about 10 minutes ago.

  11. he just tried to escape the cops, running down alison ave, heading towards laveta terrace. white, medium height, skinny, bald, wearing shorts and no shirt.

  12. owwwwww nice going!

  13. Yay! Thank you! (and THANK YOU Eastsider, you perform a VALUABLE community service!)

  14. Thank you Lt. Wes Buhrmester for posting an update and for catching the criminal! Allison Ave. thanks you and the LAPD!

  15. lol they didnt capture nobody…………..

  16. THANK YOU Wes!! Good to know I can go outside now.

  17. Hearing the helicopter overhead again.

  18. Kensington resident

Just before 2pm I drove past the corner of Allison and Laveta, where several squad cars were parked at the North corner: at least one cop had a gun drawn, pointed at a man behind the fence. It looked like a moment of reckoning, however I didn’t linger to take in all the details…

  19. Thanks Wes! Everytime I hear good news, it makes me happy. Hope all the officers & dogs are safe.

  20. The house they were targeting is 2 houses from mine and has been a problem in the past. I remember when Glendale PD came in and did a raid on the house a several years back. Glad they sent in the dogs.

  21. Thanks Wes! Everytime I hear good news, it makes me happy. Hope all the officers & dogs are safe.

I had my car broken into and that victim feeling does not feel well. I hope justice is served and we can all rest easy tonight.

  22. My friend lives right there on Alison. She writes:
Funny story: After the last two night of having ghetto birds and cops searching around our house for a burglary suspect, this morning I’m walking my dog and see that they are arresting one of the guys that lives three doors down. There are like 10 + cops surrounding him as he sits on the front stairs. I’m walking across the street and one of the cops comes over and asked me about my dog. We are talking when all the sudden I hear “HEY!” I look up to see the guy they are arresting with no shirt or shoes on, jump up, dash across the top of his garage, scale a 9ft fence, fall down on the other side, jump up and run for his life into the back of the neighbors house. ALL THIS while 10 + scramble to figure out what the fuck just happened and try to run after him (none tried to hop that fence). That was one of the best things I have ever witnessed. And now they are back to square one of ghetto birds and cop cars searching the area.

  23. So, from these posts, let me get this straight: Off. Buhrmester told us the guy was caught. But actually, he was not, and even as this post right above mine, at 5:14 p.m., they are still trying to catch the guy?

  24. I heard the heli come back, but it’s been gone for a while now again. So either that story isn’t true, he fully escaped, or he escaped and they caught him a second time.

  25. walking on allison

I also saw the guy in cuffs today. he looked like he was on drugs he was really really skinny. does anyone know if he hurt anyone? He was probably just going stealing for his drug habit which I’m not saying is in anyway ok, but I’m just wondering why the cops went so out of control on this. Maybe there’s something they’re not telling us?

  26. Quit referring to it as a “ghetto bird”
Ya , I get it , but Echo Park is not a ghetto !
Its been home to me and my family for 56 years .

  28. Thanks so much for all the info! Is there any way this guy gets bailed out tonight and ends up right back in the neighborhood?

  29. thanks to the eastsider for keeping us informed and thanks to the lapd for plucking this guy out of our yards. glad no one got hurt.

  30. akr,

He will not bail out, as he has a bench warrant which will require his appearance before a judge, at the earliest on Monday. The bail on the warrant is $10,000, and the bail for the burglary is $50,000.

    Wes

  31. This guy tried to break into my friends’ house while they were at home. They also witnessed him trying to break into the building next door. If it were you and your house, you’d want the police to keep it up until they caught him!

  32. …So why is this helicopter circling now? Just for fun?

  33. Thanks to the LAPD for getting one less criminal off the streets. I’ll put up with the heli noise as long as it helps in creating a safer city.
And special thanks to Lt. Buhrmester for taking the time to keep us informed. Coming from a family with several members on”the job” I know a lot of people don’t realize how crazy your can actually be. Thank you.

  34. Amazing how people much rather have a criminal live next door to them then put up with a little noise….Im for one thankful we have brave officers that chase criminals and work hard to make my community safer……

  35. @EP to WA:

ALL THIS while 10 + scramble to figure out what the fuck just happened and try to run after him (none tried to hop that fence).

Thank you for pointing out the exact reason why the helicopter is circling for hours every night.

hilarious story by the way. i know we need the cops here but i’ll be damned if mostly they don’t just clog up the line at Urth Cafe in the morning.
