Storefront Report: Pilates studios pop up in Echo Park & Silver Lake

Pilates Body Shop (left) & Pilates & Art (right)

After yoga studios of all kinds opened their doors in recent years across Echo Park and Silver Lake, pilates studios now seem to be following suit, with two opening up this year. Earlier this year, The Pilates Bodyshop, established by by Kerri Campbell of Atwater Village, began offering classes in a former office building on Rowena Avenue in Silver Lake.  This week, Echo Park resident Tannis Kobrinsky opened her first studio, Pilates & Art, on Echo Park Avenue in a space next to Yogala yoga studio.  Both owners are confident there is enough neighborhood demand to fill up their studios and classes. Click on the link below for Q & A with the owners.

Kerri Campbell, The Pilates Body Shop

Q: What attracted you to this space and Silver Lake?
A: This building was built in the late 1940’s and has so much character that when I saw the space for the first time; I just fell in love.  The studio is 2800 square feet, much larger then average studio and I knew we could turn this into a premium space in which to really move around and explore.  It also had a full parking lot in back and an enormous chandelier which was the icing on the cake.

Q: Can you explain why your style of pilates sets you apart from competitors?
A: We are the only Fletcher Pilates® studio in Los Angeles and one of only a few in the world. Ron Fletcher was the first person to bring Pilates to the West Coast back in the early 1970’s and with the permission of Clara Pilates his work evolved over the years to include many unique and trademarked techniques including Fletcher Towelwork™, Fletcher Floorwork™, Fletcher Barrework™, and Percussive breath, as well as the original Pilates repertoire.  You can experience all of this in our beautiful space in both Private and Group Lessons.

Q: What are your rates like?
A: We have Private Lessons for as low as $62, Group Equipment Classes for $35, and Studio Classes starting at $15 a piece and even an unlimited 30 Day Class Pass so that we can make this work accessible to every kind of budget.  But our best deal is for new clients; the Fletcher 101, which is 4 Private Lessons and 2 Studio Classes for $250. This package is a great way to start your Fletcher Pilates Practice and helps to get you ready to enter group classes.

Q: Is there’s room for yet another pilates studio in the area?
A:  Absolutely.  I know there are a number of studios in Silver Lake, and in Los Feliz.  Until now Echo Park lacked it’s own studio.  I teach Pilates mat classes at Yogala, which is right next door to Pilates & Arts on Echo Park Avenue.  Students who come to my Yogala Pilates mat class said it a dream come true to have a yoga studio within walking or biking distance.

Q: What are you rates?
A:  Our privates will be $65, and $600 for a series of 10.  Our group sessions, with 4 max in a group, are $270 for a series of 10.   To compare, some nearby studios charge $90 for a private.  Pilates & Arts will also function as a gallery, and we will host some small cultural gatherings so that the space can be utilized by the Echo Park community – which honor the arts oriented focus of Echo Park.   This weekend, October 15 and 16, I’m offering FREE introductory sessions on the apparatus from 9AM until 4PM

  1. yay for pilates bodyshop!!

  2. Hi Tannis, What a great location for a great studio! I loved reading about your “Ron Flether style!” I was trained the “west coast style”, as they say! I am currently working with a woman whom worked with Clara Pilates… yes she really did! and her personality shows it! If you know what I mean! East coast all the way, Greta is her name and you may know her!… So to quit beating around the bush! I would love to have a chance to refresh some of the stuff I have tucked away! With that being said! Is it possible to have you or a trainer go through the levels with me as a refresher course, so I don’t feel so intimidated by the “lol” master Greta”! I do believe I am a great teacher and my clients love me too! I would be happy to work for time or pay for time! Thank you! And…
Best to Your New Studio…Alison Oliver

  3. O! M! G! I’m! Gonna! Puke!
Those of us who have lived in E.P. know where to walk for great yoga, we’ve been doing it for over 12 years without the West Side prices.
That said, good luck to your Pilates studio.
