Pony up to Elysian Park

Mary-Austin Klein was in Elysian Park this afternoon when she caught sight of two ponies grazing near Stadium Way and Scott Avenue.  How did they get there? Klein explains:

“The owner of the ponies transports them in the back of an old VW van. He said he comes to Elysian a few times a month.”

  1. Good for the park (the grazing) and I’m sure the ponies enjoy the open space and grass…but I also wonder if perhaps they’re in the area for a children’s party…rental ponies are often popular as entertainment for children’s parties:

(which would explain why they had the saddles and bridles). Could also be a way of advertising the service—not criticizing, good way to get the info out and keep the animals fed…

  2. Yes, he’s often there to offer rides.

  3. damn hipsters and their off leash ponies.

  5. When the magazine L.A. Parent began, back in the early ’80’s, it was called Pony Ride. I’m not sure when the name changed; I think within the first few years of publication.
