Woman killed in Glassell Park shooting*

A shooting in Glassell Park Monday night left one woman dead and a man injured. Patch reports that the shooting took place at about 9 p.m. in the 3200 block of Verdugo Road. The victims knew each other but there was not much more information available, including a motive for the shooting.

* Update: The female victim has been identified as 18-year-old Nichole Zuniga, said Lt. Steven Flores with the Northeast Division.  The surviving victim, 21-year-old Michael Cortes, remains in critical condition. No suspects are in custody.  “The motive remains unknown, but we are investigating it as a gang-related crime based upon the manner in which it was carried out,”  Flores said in an email.

  1. There was an arrest made of a gang member on Sat night in Cypress Park off of Pepper, the next morning the boundaries for the turf had been tagged. Seems like there is there is something going on lately.

  2. Right at the Verdugo. There have been other shootings there

  3. Not “right at the Verdugo”. It was 0ver two blocks south in a small bungalow complex next to the St. Bernard School.

And there have been only been 1 other shooting on Verdugo that I know of in the last 2-3 years (besides the time the cop shot the kid with the fake gun). It’s actually pretty quiet along Verdugo, not that much goes down compared to Cypress Park or the other side of the 2 by Drew St.

  4. Oh, geez. “Right at the Verdugo!?” How about, right near an elementary school, right near where families live and children play? Right at the Verdugo? Find somewhere else to drink if this actually frightens you.

LAPD Northeast needs to increase arrests within their “Gang Unit”!! Four drive by shootings in 3 months is ridiculous . Let’s not mention the grow house that was right under their nose that glendale PD busted.

From actual experience , I call the northeast police station routinely because unfortunately I live by one of those infamous public stair cases that connect two streets. The stair cases are a popular hangout spot for the local hoods to drink beer and get high. Average police response time for this type of call 45-60mins.

Where is my tax dollar going?

Had to buy a gun because unfortunately LAPD doesnt instill a sense of confidence in northeast.

  6. Shooting occured on June 11, at 3232 Verdugo Rd. Woman died at the scene, man died the next day. Gang related, 100%. Word is the male was sporting a tattoo visible to eye with the moniker, ” Avenue Killer”. There have been 40 homicides (killings) within two mile radius of Verdugo Rd in past two years. Thats too much. Not a safe area by any means. After dark, go at your own risk. There is a tortilla factory across from 3000 Verdugo Rd with a graffiti mural on sides of the building. One clearly depicts tentacles pulling down a high rise building (City of L.A) and spelling out AVE-57. Recently it was graffitied over on one side of the building. Not the work of art I described, but still a disturbing development. Maybe a precursor to gang warfare.
