Storefront Report: Silver Lake restaurant plans an upward move

Who knew that Silver Lake had such a strong craving for raw and fried oysters?  Since it opened at the beginning of the year, L & E Oyster Bar has attracted numerous positive reviews and  customers, many of whom are left to stand on the sidewalk as they wait for a table to open at the small Silver Lake Boulevard restaurant.  But the wait for tables might get shorter – or at least more comfortable – as the owners of L & E plan to  take over the second floor of the building and expand the times they can serve beer and wine.

The expansion will nearly double the restaurant’s space to a little more than 2,000 square-feet and allow it to seat 93 diners at indoor and outdoor tables.  In addition, L & E, which was opened by the owners of Bar Covell in Los Feliz,  is seeking to city permission to expand the time it can serve beer and wine. If approved, L & E would be able to serve alcohol from  11 a.m. to 12 a.m. on Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.  on Friday and Saturday. A public hearing is planned for Aug. 1

L & E partner Tyler Bell said they hope to complete the expansion as soon as possible but did not know when the second floor dining room would open.

“We are planning on expanding our dining area upstairs, essentially duplicating our downstairs floor plan, with sight modifications designed to better serve patrons wanting raw oysters and other cold items,” said partner Tyler Bell.  The extra space will also provide “those customers waiting on a table downstairs somewhere to congregate other than on the sidewalk.”

  1. As a close neighbor, they have my support. I’ve never had to deal with excessive noise from this place and I’ll be glad to have a great neighborhood bar that serves past 10pm!

  2. I say ‘yay’! This is a fun place to nosh and hang. While I’m not totally in love with the menu (it’s a bit on the heavy side. Even the salad is smothered in cream dressing), I AM in love with cheerful, well-designed, thoughtful places that open in our neighborhood. Plus, a girl needs heavy cream on her lettuce now and then, especially with a side of beer or wine. Congrats, L & E!

  3. This place rocks. I try to go consistently to keep up on the changing specials. The management is super friendly and I’ve even been back to talk to the chef a few times who kicks ass. KA KAWWWW !

  4. please approve. so i can drink their delicious Picpoul wine late into the night.

  5. l&e is an excellent addition to the silverlake community. They often have long waits. the expansion will be very helpful to reduce overflow and better serve their guests, neighbors and the community. this is very exciting, I look forward to enjoying the new space.
