For more than 20 years, the fifth graders at Multnomah Elementary the Hillisde Village section of El Sereno end the school year with a field trip to Yosemite that compliments the school curriculum. “Some current parents who went many years ago said they cherish the memory and found it vary valuable,” said said parent volunteer Lisa Catalano-Herrera. But that field trip costs about $40,000. As part of a fundraiser by Multnomah parents, the school, which has magnet programs for sciences as well as high gifted and deaf and hearing impaired students, is competing in an online contest to help secure funds. Catalano-Herrera explains how residents can help:

People can go to PowerABrightFuture.com and register and then vote by computer or text 1625pbf to 95248 every 24 hours until Dec. 19. The top voted schools get $25,000-$50,000. We’ve moved up to 199 from 216 but need a lot of help.

The school is seeking funds from other foundations as well, she said.
