Police warn Silver Lake residents of purse snatcher

NeighborhoodWatchLogo.JPGPolice are warning Silver Lake residents to pay extra attention to their surroundings after a woman had her purse snatched on Saturday afternoon by a man who jumped out of the bushes on Silver Lake Boulevard near Rockford Road. No other purse snatchings have been reported since then and police want to keep it that way by getting the word out of the Dec. 22 incident, said Senior Lead Officer Al Polehonki with the Northeast Division.   The woman was walking alone on the east side of  Silver Lake Boulevard across from the reservoir at about 3:30 p.m. when the suspect hiding in the bushes grabbed and shoved her to the ground.

Polehonki provided more details:

Once on the ground, he grabbed her head and banged it against the sidewalk, then pulled the purse from her grasp and fled in a northbound direction on foot. A passerby came to her assistance and the police were called. A small purse, cell phone, cash, credit card, headphone set, and keys were taken. The victim was not seriously injured and will continue to walk the area but said that she will walk along the lake side of the street instead.

“As you are out walking, try to remain in areas that don’t offer a suspect a place to hide,” said Polehonki, sharing the victim’s advice.  “Try to remain aware of your surroundings even when enjoying music or other entertainment on your electronic device. I researched the recent past and have found no other similar activity. The victim was able to provide a limited description of the suspect as the attack occurred so suddenly, a male with no further details.”
