A smiling – and heavily armed – welcome to the Police Academy

The pair of heavily-armed officers standing outside the Los Angeles Police Department Academy, located halfway between Solano Canyon and Echo Park, would have probably looked more menacing if they had not been smiling so much.  The officers along with barricades greeted visitors to the academy this morning after the LAPD stepped up security as a manhunt continued for former LAPD officer Christopher Jordan Dorner, who is wanted in connection with three homicides, including that of an officer in Riverside   Entering the grounds of the  police academy, tucked into the bottom of a canyon in Elysian Park, is normally just a  matter of walking in off the street. There is no need to sign in, no security screening or guards at the entrance.  That’s not the case today.
