The concrete playing courts at an Echo Park social service center were jammed this afternoon, not with basketball players but with politicians, reporters and a crowd of onlookers ready to hear newly elected mayor Eric Garcetti hold an outdoor news conference.

Garcetti, who lived for a several years in Echo Park before moving to Silver Lake,  took questions from reporters before leaving the courts at El Centro Del Pueblo as a crowd of well wishers, photographers and TV camera people swarmed around Garcetti and security personnel as he  made his way out of sight.
