Fruit tree line up./Jessica Craven

Trees waiting for adoption/Assemblymember Jimmy Gomez/Facebook

A fruit-tree giveaway attracted a long line of people this morning in the parking lot of the Superior Grocers in Highland Park. Mt. Washington resident Jessica Craven, who snapped the photo above, was among those who claimed about 200, five-gallon cherry, avocado, and plum trees in a tree adoption organized by Million Trees L.A. and State Assemblyman Jimmy Gomez.

That parking lot probably could have used some trees to shade all the sunburned folks who waited in line. Said Craven:

The line was long, the sun quite glaring, and shade very scarce, but in the end everyone, including us, drove off with a four-foot-tall fruit tree sapling in very good health.

  1. Grow them well!!!

  2. Most cherry trees require a certain amount of chilling hours; I hope they distributed a low-chill variety.
