Freeway closures make for a slow-moving Monday*

Google traffic map shows heavy traffic (in red) on the 5 Freeway and nearby surface streets.

The work week got off to a bad start today for commuters who must contend with the freeway closures caused by this weekend’s tanker truck fire that damaged a highway tunnel under the 5 and 2 freeway interchange. While the northbound and southbound 2 Freeway was reopened, the northbound 5 Freeway remains shut down and two southbound lanes are also closed as crews repair damage to the freeway.

Many residents in nearby Atwater, Elysian Valley and Silver Lake were not happy either as they were awakened by the pre-dawn drone of news helicopters hovering overhead.

* Update: Caltrans reopened two of the four closed lanes on the northbound 5 Freeway shortly before 5 p.m

Residents and motorists vented and shared advice on social media:

  1. We should probably build an 8 mile tunnel connecting the 710 and 210 freeways. That sounds like a great idea.
