Seasonal fruits and vegetables are important at Tasty Mama’s, the new cafe in Hermon that’s boasting a menu with smoothies and pastries made in-store. Owner Sharine Xuan, originally from nearby South Pasadena, champions the idea of ambiance and L.A. pride for her corner cafe.

“We want to be a neighborhood cafe. I want it to be a place where anyone in the area can get comfortable. This is my neighborhood too,” says Xuan who recently moved down the street from her shop at the corner of Monterey Road and Redfield Avenue.

Xuan is taking to heart the idea of local, having fresh vegetables and fruits delivered three times a week from Santa Maria, and her staff is comprised of graduates from Homeboy Industries. A mural adorns the walls of the cafe that celebrates L.A. pride, all the while customers can sit down and enjoy the smell of spinach muffins fresh out of the oven. Tasty Mama’s own brand of salad dressing, handmade jams and fruit drinks are available at nearby Frescos Market.

Tasty Mama’s  moved into the  former site of Cycle Way Cafe that closed in 2010. Though Xuan is too optimistic to let that interfere with her business which originally began as a booth at local Farmer’s Markets.

“I can’t speak for the other businesses that have been here before. I think it’s a hidden gem. The place is wonderful and the people in the area are great. It certainly has nothing to do with the karma.”
