Bulletin Board: Volunteer Tutors Needed for Homeless Children in Your Community

Submitted by Paula School on Wheels

Are you looking for a way to make a difference in your community? Why not become a volunteer tutor for a homeless child? The nonprofit School on Wheels is looking for dedicated people to volunteer tutor for one hour a week with homeless children and youth, (all grade levels and ages are available). The wonderful kids we serve are living in shelters, emergency drop-in centers and other locations throughout six counties in southern California.. No previous tutoring or teaching experience is required, just a willingness to make a real and lasting difference in a young person’s life by helping them academically. And you will be volunteering with a student in an age range that you’re comfortable working with for just an hour a week. For more info about School on Wheels and to apply online, please visit our website: http://www.schoolonwheels.org/ Thank you!

  1. Ascencia (located adjacent to Atwater Village) runs one of the shelters that School on Wheels supports. We have had an excellent experience with the tutors they provide and the children in our program benefit greatly from the attention. Homeless families with children tend to move frequently, making it difficult to keep up with their education. We have had children start the program significantly behind in their studies. Our School on Wheels tutors have brought them from struggling to mastery in their grade level. If you have the skills and can spare the time, I highly recommend it!
