Silver Lake native leaves a colorful mark on her neighborhood

Artist Cecilia Romero – aka Cecilia Paints – has created a hard-to-ignore mural inside a Silver Lake grocery that features her trademark use of vibrant colors, energetic imagery and memorable faces. The mural of a person whose eyes are covered with orange slices was painted inside the Yummy.Com store but is visible to passersby through a large window that overlooks Polka Dot Plaza. “I was stoked to paint a fun new mural right where I was born & raised,” Romero said in a Facebook post.

Romero explained her love and use of colors in an interview with The Stitch:

I’d have to say it is both;part of my vision(s) as well as somewhat of a strategy, in my creative process. I definitely enjoy painting with vibrant colors, when using psychedelic, non-traditional skin tones that naturally stand out. I feel with the emotions I portray; the colors compel, compliment and exaggerate what the feeling is. Most of the time I’ll get a vision of what I want to paint, starting with a certain emotion I envision for a new portrait, and then the colors will fall into place from there. Although, when I’m painting strands of hair, with different colors in my portraits, I love to be more free-form and improvisational as I let the creative process take over and channel through me.

Romero post numerous photos of the Silver Lake mural as it was being painted on her Facebook page.
