The El Sereno campus of Cal State L.A. seems far removed from the glamorous world of Hollywood. But more than 700 undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled in the school’s  Department of Television, Film and Media Studies, and the university operates the nation’s only Masters in Fine Arts program in Television, Film and Theatre. After being scattered around campus, those entertainment related programs have moved into a new $7 million Television, Film and Media Center, which will be dedicated on Friday afternoon.

The center, a former Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints building that overlooks the campus, raises the media program’s profile and allows students to take advantage of a high-tech production facility. In addition to existing programs, the center, which opened to students and staff last fall, will also house new programs, including certification classes in AVID video and audio post-production editing.

The church’s former basketball court is  now the site of a  2,300 square-foot sound stage, which is near a 3-D motion capture studio, digital audio recording and mixing rooms, projection and screening rooms, computer lab, conference and collaboration and, of course, classrooms.

“The new center provides a great opportunity to enhance ongoing partnerships and to develop new collaborations that will dramatically increase educational, training and employment opportunities for our students,” said Department Chair John Ramirez in a statement.
