The wide strip of land that runs in front of the Los Feliz Post office on Vermont Avenue was never that inviting, with a few scraggly plants and yellowed pieces of grass struggling to grow in the barren space. Now, after native shrubs, grasses and other drought-tolerant greenery was planted last fall, the once forlorn strip has been reborn as Paseo de Los Feliz. On Sunday afternoon, Green Space Los Feliz, the group which spearheaded the project, will host a grand opening for the project, which is dotted with boulders and tree-stump seats as well as benches and swales, a trench that collects rain water.
The new 4,500-square-feet of landscaping, which also wraps around the north side of the post office, cost $6,000, with funding coming from the office of Councilman Tom LaBonge, the Los Feliz Neighborhood Council, EnrichLA and donations from community members and businesses. “We had to scrap up pennies for this,” said Jennifer Lao with Green Space Los Feliz. But there were also some unexpected sources of support. “We sat at Farmer’s Market one day and a resident dropped a check for $2,ooo,” she said
The grand opening of Paseo de Los Feliz will take place on Sunday, March 23rd from 12:30 pm – 2pm.
