Boyle Heights photographer Rafael Cardenas will present his street photographs of the Eastside as part of an exhibition – “Because L.A.” – that opens tonight in Chinatown. Cardenas’ show will be held in conjunction with a second exhibit by Juan Luis Garcia, a photographer and graphic designer whose “Those Who Favor Fire” exhibit features images of flowers set ablaze. Here are more details about the two shows:

“Because L.A.” is the latest street photography project by Rafael Cardenas that documents the cultural landscape of Los Angeles’ Eastside neighborhoods and its often unseen residents. His photographs show the beauty and realness of the city as witnessed through the lens of someone born, raised and entrenched in the community. As recently featured in Zocalo Public Square Blog, Cardenas was behind “Reflejos y Regalos de East Los,” the exhibition at Costello Park of life-size portraits taken at pop-up photo booths around the eastside. rafa.la

In “Those Who Favor Fire” Juan Luis Garcia’s, displays his photographs of flowers that have been set ablaze, conveying the dangerous passion that love inspires. Garcia is a photographer, graphic designer and art director based in Los Angeles known for his intimate portraits and movie poster design. www.juanluisgarcia.com

Tonight’s opening reception for both shows will be held from 6 pm – 9 pm at Homegirl Café.  The shows will run through May 2014. Click here for details.
