HERMON — Police are asking the public for help in connection with last week’s fatal shooting of a 52-year-old man who was living in a make-shift tent near the 110 Freeway.

Ruben Castaneda was shot multiple times when he emerged from the tent at about 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, according to police.  Castenada was pronounced dead at the murder scene next to the northbound lanes of the 110 Arroyo Seco Parkway near the Gold Line rail bridge.   The motive of the shooting is unknown and it’s not clear if more than one suspect was involved.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Hollenbeck Homicide Detectives Barajas or Zolezzi at (323) 342-8957. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (800-222-8477)

There are too many people living down in the arroyo secco. It isn’t safe to run down by the river or take the bike path anymore. They have taken over. The cops should clear that out. I have reported them for harassment twice. Nothing was done. Now this.

  2. I have reported these people down there 4 to 5 times, with no response. LAPD actually sending back a notification that South Pasadena police were investigating in Debs Park. Really South Pasadena is investigating in LA 90042? What an embarrassment for LAPD.
They are still at the Via Marisol exit as well , the tent subdivision is growing it seems daily yet nobody seems to want to get out of their cruiser to get rid of these people. I can guarantee you something else is going to happen especially with a grade school so close to theses encampments.
Let me give you a clue what kind of people live like this, people who are on the run from something ,drugged out or dealing with psychological issues. Why would any police supervisor be aware of this condition and think nothing was going to “evolve” from this?
Like the recent rapes in Orange County perpetrated by homeless people living in encampments , how is this rocket science?
