Storefront Report: New Silver Lake sushi restaurant won’t be easy to miss

Umi Sushi behind the red screen | Sandy Driscoll

SILVER LAKE — The new bright red, wood screen marks the future home of Umi Sushi in the Silver Lake Boulevard building once occupied by Reservoir and Netty’s.  Sandy Driscoll snapped the photo above this weekend as painters applied a coat of fire-engine red on the wooden screen in front of the building at the corner of Silver Lake Boulevard and Effie Street.

The owners have not yet revealed much info about what they have planned for the 33-seat restaurant but last year they applied for city permission to serve a full line of alcoholic drinks, not just beer and wine.

  1. Just what everyone was asking for … more sushi … Wheres the bagels, sandwich shop, etc…

    • We need a good bagel shop – Noah’s Bagles

    • Sandy Driscoll

Best bagels around are at the Brooklyn Bagel Bakery (2217 W Beverly Blvd at Alvarado) http://www.brooklynbagella.com
It’s not a sit down restaurant, but a wholesale bakery that sells to the public. Between 3-5pm every day, their bagels are half price!

    • I honestly do not know what you people are talking about. We are in desperate need of a great sushi place as well as a great salad and sandwich place.

Name a single decent sushi place in Silverlake.

  2. I could use a Warm Seafood Salad right about now.

  3. Well, hopefully, this place won’t be hard to FIND!

  4. Don’t you mean “WILL be hard to miss”?

  5. We’ve got plenty of sushi. Why someone hasn’t opened a proper Boars Head Deli is beyond me. It would make a fortune in this location. In the meantime Black Hogg is it, or gelsons!

Shame its still got the size and parking issues. that intersection is a nightmare.

    • There actually was a deli that used Boar’s Head products! It was on Sunset, I think where Food Lab is now. It didn’t even last a year, if i recall correctly.

  6. Looks great! Looking forward to another awesome neighborhood restaurant!

  7. Boar’s Head deli? Go back to New Jersey.

  8. While we do need a few more great sandwich places, please no Boar Head. That is gross and just something you have to live with while in the Jersey swamps.

  9. Too bad this wasn’t open when i lived down the street… the sushi bar on Sunset was very hit and miss.

As far as a deli, I’m guessing that would do well in Silver Lake. Especially if, unlike that last one that went out of business, they had some decent veggie and vegan options (i.e. not processed fake meats/cheeses from the supermarket, but proper homemade seitan and nut cheeses.)

Happy to see a new sushi place. Hopefully it is good.
