ECHO PARK —  After demolishing nearly a block-long strip of buildings last year, construction workers have been busy building the 49-unit City View Apartments in the 1600 block of Temple Street.  The project is one of several new residential developments planned for Temple Street through the southern section of Echo Park and Historic Filipinotown.

Many residents are not happy to see such large apartment complexes rising in the area. In the case of City View Apartments, which is being built by 4 Site Development, some local merchants were unhappy that the project would lack storefronts, with much of the street level occupied by a parking garage.  While the developer said the parking garage would be disguised with landscaping and decorative grates, one member of the Echo Park neighborhood council said he thought the strip would become “a dead zone.”

The complex will stretch from the Tribal Cafe (pictured at left) on the west to nearly a Chevron gas station on the east.

  1. I’m with the residents on this one – a total waste of important streetscape to just have a parking garage fronting Temple St. The developer couldn’t do better? Too bad.
