Storefront Report: Silver Lake salon offers a modern take on the classic barbershop

SILVER LAKE — After seeing more male customers walk through their doors, Howie Goldklang and Carly Flynn of Silver Lake’s The Establishment salon have opened a new shop specializing in men’s haircuts. Southpaw on Hyperion Avenue opened this month in the former of the Videoactive video store with the idea of merging elements of a barber shop – fades, clipper work and beard trims – and a full-service salon. You can also expect gourmet coffee grooming accessories, shaving kits and some vintage merchandise – ’70s and ’80s new sunglasses as well as ’60s iron-on NFL patches – stocked with the male customer in mind.

“We had the idea to do a men’s focused salon for the past year and a half,” Goldklang said. “The space opened up in a building owned by our current landlord and we jumped on it.”

Southpaw, which will hold a grand opening celebration on August 2, will be competing with other newcomers catering to the well-groomed male.In Echo Park, Manly & Sons Barber Co. plans to open up an barbershop and store stocked with grooming supplies as well as ties, suspenders and other accessories.

  1. Good lord, $45 for a cut at a “Barbershop”?

    No thanks.

  2. You can come to my barbershop; Floyd’s Barber Shop and get your haircut for 80 cents. I also have a second chair. His name is Bill. He will do something called a facial for $1.50. I bet you can even place or show at his chair!
