2 Freeway bomb scare triggers traffic jam in Echo Park & Silver Lake [updated]

The red and black lines on the Google traffic map show where traffic is jammed at 10:45 a.m.

Traffic is backed up across portions of Echo Park and Silver Lake as well as the 2 and 5 freeways as the investigation of a suspicious package prompted the closure of streets and a freeway entrance.

Update @ 11:30 a.m.: LAPD found  an “inert grenade,” said Officer Jane Kim with the LAPD.  She did not know if the grenade was destroyed but some residents said they heard an explosion. Not clear when freeway onramp will be opened.

Update @ 11:45 a.m.: Traffic lanes have been reopened, according to CHP Traffic.
