Bomb squad investigating suspicious package in Silver Lake area business [updated]

SILVER LAKE — Streets and a freeway offramp have been closed as the LAPD’s Bomb Squad investigated a suspicious package – that was found inside a business  in the 2400 block of Fletcher Drive, according to preliminary police reports.

A SigAlert has been declared after the Fletcher Drive offramp on the southbound 5 Freeway was closed, and residents report that Riverside Drive has  been shut down at Gilroy as well as streets in Elysian Valley. Fletcher Drive has been shut down at Glendale Boulevard in Silver Lake, according to one resident.

The closure of the Fletcher Drive offramp might be the reason why the southbound 2 Freeway and Glendale Boulevard remain heavily congested this afternoon through Echo Park.

* Update:  Footage from TV news helicopters shows a bomb squad robot checking a guitar case on top of a bus shelter in front of an Arco gas station at Fletcher and Riverside.  Police determined that the case was empty at 12:51 p.m., according to Officer Drake Madison. The SigAlert on the southbound 5 Freeway was extended until 1 pm.

  1. Does anyone know how to get inside ripple st? Everything is blocked off -.-

    • Your only option may be to take Los Feliz to San Fernando and take the New bridge over to Riverside Dr. travel on Crystal St.. Doesn’t sound like any of the streets are blocked off on church side of Frogtown.. Good luck.. My son takes the bus from Marshall. I hope it’s cleared up by then..

  2. Please don’t blow up Rick’s!!! I love that place!!!

  3. Southbound 2 Frwy traffic let up at noon today.

  4. A neighbor off Riverside reports Riverside Drive was just reopened

  5. Remind me to call in the bomb squad for explosives I think might be camouflaged in a discarded sofa.

  6. A bomb in Silver lake? What a joke. I say de-fund the bomb squad and get the homeless some housing. Or get the cops to actually respond to real crises.

  7. I would have happily taken the job of that robot if they just let me by on Riv Dr… No chance of a bomb in guitar case where that was, what mastermind would think that one up????

  8. An empty guitar case was the “suspicious package”??? Gah. I was an hour late to work trying to figure out how to get onto Ripple St.

  9. we just asked a policeman what happened, after we heard a loud explosion, and we were told that a grenade had been detonated by the bomb squad on the 2 on ramp.
