Eastside Weekend: Walk Boyle Heights; Laugh or Whatever; Julius Caesar

walking tour

Tour Boyle Heights, on foot, with resident Erick Huerta, who will point out various landmarks on First Street. The tour is about two miles, so wear comfy shoes, maybe bring a hat. Tour starts at Self Help Graphics & Art and will end at El Mercadito for some lunch. Saturday, October 18, 10:30 a.m.

Silver Lake comic shop Secret Headquarters’ latest show, Forever Feeling, features Jesse California’s trippy art. The everlasting-summer vibe that lives in California’s work is psychedelic and a bit radical. There are a few watercolor beards, bikinis and ample amounts of bare skin. Friday, October 17, 7 p.m.

Julius Caesar takes over Casa 0101 Theater, with direction from Robert Beltran and an all Latino cast. Not to mention a Latina Brutus. Politics and betrayal are nothing new in society, but marvel at how Shakespeare collapses an entire empire with the death of one man. Saturday, October 17,  8 p.m.

Culture Collide Festival wraps up on Saturday with plenty more bands from around the world. Acts like Dune Rats from Australia, Sleep Thieves from Ireland and Cloud Nothings from the US will play Friday. And on Saturday Dark Furs, Bixby Knolls and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah will close out the festival at various stages throughout Echo Park. Friday & Saturday, October 17 and 18.

Maybe there will be some observational humor. Something about lines at banks. Maybe a few existential quips that border on neurotic. Whatever, the comedy show, features Jackie Kashian, Heather Thomson, Raj Desai and a few other funny people. Friday, October 17, 8:30 p.m.
