Highland Park woman chases away burglars

HIGHLAND PARK — A woman who lives on the boundary of Highland Park and Eagle Rock said she chased off a trio of burglars as they attempted to steal bikes from her garage  while she was at home on Monday night. “I’m still shaken up but so glad I managed to scare them off,” she said in an email.

The woman provided more details about what happened at her home in the the 1800 block of Avenue 51:

Around 7:30 pm three Latino men in their early 20s attempted to break into my house. They were taking bikes from the garage and were in the driveway between the bonus room and garage. I saw them through my son’s bedroom window and yelled at them to leave. At that point they ran out of the side gate into the street.

The woman said she was alerted to the burglars after an alarm indicated that a door to an attached bonus room had been opened. Police think the burglars might have jumped a fence from a neighbor’s property to enter the garage.

“The police came promptly and were helpful,” the woman said in an email. “Please warn readers in this neck of the woods to be careful and make sure they lock up when they are home, even if it is early.”
