ECHO PARK — The LAPD Bomb Squad is investigating a suspicious package alongside the 2 Freeway this morning, according to LAPD spokeswoman Jane Kim. Glendale Boulevard near the 2 Freeway has been blocked and the northbound entrance to the freeway has been shut down, with traffic rerouted to Allesandro Street.

A SigAlert was declared shortly before 9 a.m. as the shut down was expected to last about two hours, according to the CHP Traffic.

It’s the second bomb scare in the area this week. On Wednesday, the streets near Fletcher and Riverside Drive were closed as the Bomb Squad investigated a suspicious package that turned out to be an empty guitar case on top of a bus shelter.

Update @ 11:30 a.m.: LAPD found  an “inert grenade,” said Kim.  She did not know if the grenade was destroyed but some residents said they heard an explosion. Not clear when freeway onramp will be opened.

Update @ 11:45 a.m.: Traffic lanes have been reopened, according to CHP Traffic.

  1. Another guitar case?

  2. Thanks again Eastsider for bringing us important really local news as it happens! Events like this affect so many neighborhoods. So many of us turn to the Eastsider first when something major is going on in our Silver Lake – Echo Park – Elysian Valley corridor.

    • It’s true. We love the east sider, but common, bomb scares? This is a joke, and a copy cat joke and a copy cat, copy cat joke. We’re getting sucked into a stupid hysteria. Isis is not really that into Echo Park.

    • here! here!
The Eastsider has been my “go to” place the minute I hear helicopters.
I am so proud of your reporting!

  3. Did anyone else hear the explosion? I did. It was very loud! Does anyone have any further information?

  4. There was a countdown followed by an explosion. It was heard where I was at on Sunset Blvd. by “Costa Alegre” what ever it was, it was loud.

  5. urg….let me fix that before being attacked by the grammar police…
but here! here! is appropriate as it is happening here…
    Meaning by my house.
