It’s all fun and games at a new Echo Park toy store

Storefront ReportECHO PARK —  40-year-old Chris Cortez never outgrew his interest in games,  toys and childhood pursuits, like Star Wars action figures and comic books. Now, the marketing consultant is turning his passion into a business: a toy, gaming and  comic book store called Alternate Universe.  The shop, located in the same Sunset Boulevard minimall that houses Sunset Beer and L.A Pizza, is scheduled to open as soon as this weekend.

Cortez, who lives in Silver Lake, said Alternate Universe is a one-stop shop for merchandise that would usually require visits to several stores.  Expect to find shelves stocked with Transformers and Hot Wheels as well as popular board and card games, such as Magic: The Gathering. But besides selling toys and games, Cortez said he wants Alternate Universe to serve as a gathering place for gaming meet ups and groups.

While Echo Park has plenty of coffee houses, vintage shops, beauty salons and bars,  Alternate Universe looks to be one of the only toy and gaming shops in the neighborhood.

  1. Will he have Vegan ,Organic, free trade, Gluten Free toys?

  3. Someone buy this man a beer! Its been well over 13-15 years since World’s Famous Comics moved and shutdown.

  4. Oh no. Not another invader. Not poor and brown enough to draw attention of the LA RAZA crowd…

    • Your ignorance is ablaze ….in technicolor .. Not all of us born and raised here are “raza”.
Im Mexican , like indie music drive a priuus , hang at the echo ,sunset beer and everywhere else i wish to . I have had a biz here , own a home , college educated and happy , never have been , never will be a gangster. Your stereotypes are offensive and not borderline ignorant, but blatantly ignorant.
I have never had to go anywhere but the place i was born and raised to enjoy such a great neighborhood.
My family are all law abiding citizens , brown or not .
Your assessment of people who were born and raised here is wrong , and as old as the “hipster” argument.
I say welcome to the neighborhood my family has enjoyed since 1952 …. Im so glad you have discovered what we have always known to be a gem , where we have build memories and friendships.

    • Mr. Long,
You sir, are not a good person, And please again I ask you to let us know where you work, So we don’t spend our poor and brown money with you.
