SILVER LAKE — A 62-year-old gardener was injured tonight after he was caught in the crossfire between two gangs during a shooting that took place near Silver Lake Boulevard and Vendome Street.

“He happened to be outside and was caught in the middle,” said Sgt. John Marroquin of the Rampart Division.

Police sealed off the area following the shooting, which took place at about 6 p.m., as they searched for suspects who ran off following the incident.

An estimated 10 to 15 males were reported running from the scene, said Lt. Wes Buhrmester. The suspects were gone when officers arrived but they found that a male gardener, who had been working in a yard, was suffering from a gunshot wound to his shoulder blade. He was transported to a hospital, where he will be treated for the non-life threatening injury and released.

The preliminary investigation “revealed that two gang factions were believed to have been shooting at each other, with a stray bullet hitting the bystander,” Buhrmester said in an email. “Witness statements led to the detention of three individuals, and a possible suspect location at an apartment in the 700 block of North Vendome St. As of this time, the three have not been charged or booked, nor has the apartment’s involvement been clearly ascertained.”

The investigation is ongoing, with gang detectives at the scene. All streets have been reopened.

  1. “It’s not clear whether the shooting was gang related”

Hilarious. I can think of a few ways to make it clear to him….

  2. Gangs are so lame.

  3. scum of the earth… does anyone know what gang(s) is in that area?

  4. Does anyone still wish to complain about gentrification?

These people clearly have no morals or education, lack of parenting has driven them down a path that does not belong in society. These savages are only fit for desert living.

Gentrification is the reason for these gangs! Whites were the ones who taught Latinos how to form gangs, now they’ll have to deal with it!

      • you’ve truly lost your mind.

      • it’s only January, but come December, this will surely be a top candidate for most retarded comment of the year award.

only Pooper Doos can top Pooper Doos

      • Martin Arredondo

More idiocy from the self proclaimed “Educated Chicano”.

They whites are dealing with it. You know how? By purchasing their homes and evicting them from their apartments. One by one these gang goons are being gentrified the f*ck out and it’s glorious!

If you haven’t noticed, Proper Dos is a troll. His comment is so incredibly stupid that the only justification for pulling something so dumb out of his ass would be to provoke people but fortunately nobody chomped at his bait.

  5. What a shame that a hard working gentleman would be wounded by some young folks with no guidance, loads of free time, and easy access to guns. My prayers go out to the wounded man and his family.

  6. vendome on either side of silver lake blvd will not let up as a point of gang tentions.

The fence of the corner house is constantly tagged- crossed out- re tagged – etc…
Just Saturday at dusk as i passed the house heading to k-town: one kid lit a Christmas tree on fire while the other tagged the fence.

  7. There is a small local gang (the name of which I won’t mention) whose numbers have dwindled to the point where their territory is vulnerable. Another gang (whose name I also won’t mention) is moving in… hence the increase in tagging and, now, the shootout.

Everyone in the neighborhood, including the cops, knows the people involved, so it’s pretty irritating that LAPD hasn’t done anything about it until now.

    • why won’t you mention the name? the LAPD doesn’t shy away from it? La Mirada Locos 13? Avenues? Tonnerville…Frogtown… and those are just a few.

    • What is the purpose of not naming names? I mean, if you’re going to comment, and you know know something, then say it. Am I missing something?

      • atwater white guy

i want to know that my street isn’t involved in a dispute… its good to educate if you are living in these neighborhoods. not just go to 4100 bar

      • When newspapers report on gang crimes, they often leave out the names of the gangs that are involved, in order to avoid giving gangsters the publicity that they crave. I think it makes sense; although I might be curious which gang is terrorizing a certain area, it seems more tactful to leave the names out. In any case, what difference does the name of the gang make, aside from satisfying our curiosity? If I see a tagger, I don’t care what he’s tagging, and if a gang member shoots an innocent bystander, it doesn’t matter whether he’s from gang x, y, or z.

  8. Hey anti-gentrifies, does this fit into your criteria of what would be considered more “culturally welcoming”?

  9. Known crews and gangs who have greatly increased near the area.
    LOE
    LMLS
    BUD
    AZT
    TXT
    EXP
my guess is 2 gangs we’re the cause of the incident ..

  10. thanks man–good to know

  11. LMLS is la mirada locos -they tend to bang in bellevue park

  12. The real terrorists are in our own backyard!

  13. Silver Lake Gentrifier

Scummy, scuzzy gang-banging losers leave already!

Gentrification is a GOOD thing. It gets rid of these cretins. I don’t care what their skin color is – or what the skin color of the gentrifiers is. As long as people with jobs, money and human decency continue to drive out these cowardly, loser dead-enders, we are all better off.

They’re almost all gone from Silver Lake. Echo Park and Highland Park are next.
