SILVER LAKE — A 62-year-old gardener was injured tonight after he was caught in the crossfire between two gangs during a shooting that took place near Silver Lake Boulevard and Vendome Street.
“He happened to be outside and was caught in the middle,” said Sgt. John Marroquin of the Rampart Division.
Police sealed off the area following the shooting, which took place at about 6 p.m., as they searched for suspects who ran off following the incident.
An estimated 10 to 15 males were reported running from the scene, said Lt. Wes Buhrmester. The suspects were gone when officers arrived but they found that a male gardener, who had been working in a yard, was suffering from a gunshot wound to his shoulder blade. He was transported to a hospital, where he will be treated for the non-life threatening injury and released.
The preliminary investigation “revealed that two gang factions were believed to have been shooting at each other, with a stray bullet hitting the bystander,” Buhrmester said in an email. “Witness statements led to the detention of three individuals, and a possible suspect location at an apartment in the 700 block of North Vendome St. As of this time, the three have not been charged or booked, nor has the apartment’s involvement been clearly ascertained.”
The investigation is ongoing, with gang detectives at the scene. All streets have been reopened.
