Socially-conscious building supply store opens in Atwater; Vaka Burger truck finds a home in Boyle Heights; chocolate shop to close after Valentine’s Day
SHOPPER & DINER For the socially-conscious Do-It-Yourselfer, the new Habitat for Humanity Restore in the far north end of Atwater Village allows you to shop for building supplies while supporting the construction of homes for low-income families. The donated items range from hardware and doors to kitchen cabinets and tile at prices said to be 30% below those at standard home improvement chains
Boyle Heights Beat will be hosting a Council District 14 candidates forum on Saturday morning. Confirmed participants include Gloria Molina, Nadine Diaz, Jose Huizar and Mario Chavez. Those attending may submit questions prior to the event to inquire about the future of Boyle Heights. Not to be outdone, Highland Park will be hosting its own candidates forum and debate.

SILVER LAKE — It was only a few weeks ago that Ralphs employees were telling customers that their Glendale Boulevard supermarket was going to remain open. Now, it's a different story. Employees and managers of the Silver Lake store have been told that their supermarket will be closing as Whole Foods says it's moving into the same space. "That location will be closing on or around March 15th," said Ralphs spokeswoman Kendra Doyel.
