BOYLE HEIGHTS --A strip of First Street storefronts across from Mariachi Plaza has gone up for sale in an area where growing signs of development and gentrification have stirred up opposition.
ECHO PARK -- The lulling sounds of a Buddhist chant box invite passersby to peep inside the small store at the corner of Echo Park and Scott Avenues. Inside, in an otherworldly setting, a wild variety of cacti displayed on cinder blocks are jammed into the 350-square-foot shop, illuminated by red light bulbs that decorate the walls. Welcome to Echo Park’s cactus shop.
HIGHLAND PARK -- Saturday, February 21 marks the grand opening of the York Park at Avenue 50, with a design that was selected by the community vote. (Did anyone specifically ask for a snake slide?) Along with the park’s opening the local Chamber of Commerce and Councilman Jose Huizar will host a community event that hopes to celebrate the businesses and artists from the neighborhood, The York Village El Mercado.

ECHO PARK -- Two men were arrested in connection with a fight and stabbing at the Gold Room bar at 1 a.m., according to a story in the Daily News. The victim was stabbed in the torso but his injury was described as non life threatening, police said.
