ECHO PARK — A new set of stop signs at Morton Avenue and Academy Road surprised some motorists today, with a few drivers blowing past the newly installed signs or coming to an abrupt halt. The intersection already had stop signs for those drivers heading downhill on Academy and Morton Place. Now, after the installation of the new signs, drivers on Morton Avenue will have to do the same.

  1. Is this Cedillo’s district?

  2. It took long enough to get this. Now we just need the Academy and Morton Pl. stop signs stripes repainted.

  3. This doesn’t fix the problem at this intersection, but it will help. The problem here is people coming down Academy Rd. RARELY stop at the stop sign. I don’t know what it is, but people just completely run through it while making a left or they pull so far out past the sign that people going up Morton have to stop. Maybe a bigger stop sign along with new paint and a large “STOP” on the road like the new stops will help. The true test will be Dodger season when people are flying up and down Academy and Morton looking for parking now that it’s $20.

  4. @skeeter – no, this is in CD13, Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell

  5. The only problem I’ve had at this intersection are the idiots doing u-turns because they don’t know where the hell they are…. now I have to stop and accelerate while watching them be idiots instead of just maneuvering around them at a comfortable rate of speed. Bunk.

  6. I think this now makes it a 5 way stop? 6 way if you count the apartment building parking lot. Combined with yielding to uphill driving vehicles this is going to make morton ave “interesting”. Pretty cumbersome for any and all directions really. We’ll see how it plays out come dodger time, not many good solutions for this odd-grade and odd-angle intersection.

  7. Awesome! Have almost been hit a few times here while walking the dog. People turning up Academy via Morton never stop and are always speeding!

    • Me, too, but the cars going up Morton didn’t have to stop. People FLY around that corner. This is great. Sadly, one parking space was lost to the one of the signs on Morton…and there aren’t ANY spaces to spare these days. It will only get worse once the monstrosity down the street fills up.

Such forethought given by the powers that be to these horrific small lot developments. What a nightmare.

  8. I’m happy to see the city installed these stop signs and appreciate LA City Councilmember Mitch O’Farrells’ office, LADOT and many local residents working over several months to make it happen. As someone who lives on Morton Ave., I’m concerned with how many people still speed down this street. For anyone driving down Morton Ave., or streets like Morton, I invite you to drive a little slower…here are 10 reasons why: https://mortonvalley.wordpress.com/2015/01/25/10-reasons-for-driving-slower-on-our-street/#more-176
