GLASSELL PARK – When it came time to expand into Northeast L.A., Jenna Turner, who operates Chango Coffee in Echo Park and owns Sunset Junction Coffee Shop in Silver Lake, skipped over York Boulevard, already brimming with new cafes and shops. That’s how she ended up in Glassell Park, where she plans to open the doors to a new coffee shop, Habitat Coffee Shop, on Eagle Rock Boulevard near Verdugo Road on Friday.
The coffee shop will feature a variety of sandwiches, salads and to-go meals – for meat lovers, vegetarians and vegans – in addition to coffee. “We are going to have a little bit for everybody,” said Turner, whose Glassell Park coffee shop will be open every day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Glassell Park has several commercial strips but none has managed to attract a critical mass of new shops and restaurants like York Boulevard. Habitat, now covered with a mural, stands out in a decidedly scene-free stretch of small commercial buildings and cluster of new townhomes. But nearby on Verdugo Road is the popular Verdugo Bar and Lemon Poppy Kitchen. Also, Turner said the nearby commercial buildings are filling up with designers and entertainment-related production companies.
While York Boulevard may already be “saturated” with dining and shopping options, Turner says there’s still a lot of opportunity in Glassell Park. “There is so much untapped potential here,” she said.
