ECHO PARK — What was with the multiple helicopter landings and departures from the top of the Citibank building on Tuesday night? It appeared that the same helicopter kept circling the neighborhood and returning to the top of the Sunset Boulevard office tower, owned by the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel, which has its circular insignia painted on the roof of the building, making for a nice bullseye for chopper pilots.

“There have been helicopters landing and taking off from the Citibank building since 9:45 pm and it’s almost 11:30 pm now,” said one Eastsider reader via email. “It’s been constant. Is there a law about this? Who would I lodge a complaint with?”

Was the chopper  on some training mission in advance of President Obama’s upcoming L.A. visit or was it flying in Echo Park bar and nightclub patrons who didn’t want to bother with parking? An employee in the church’s medial relations department said they had no information about Tuesday night’s helicopter activity, saying the helipad was operated by a separate company. Echo Park residents, however, offered up some theories and complaints as the helicopter buzzed overhead:

  1. contact your council office and Angelus Temple

  2. Maybe they were Scientologists scoping out a building on the east side. They are night owls. But seriously, who do we complain about this. Couldn’t get to sleep last night because of these a**holes.

  3. Obviously training. For whom? Who knows.

  4. Nice upside down cross!

  5. I wondered about this too. Unless something has changed, that helipad is run by Helitac Aviation
    1910 W Sunset Blvd Ste 900
    Los Angeles, CA 90026

The choppers seemed to be circling back a bit too fast for tours, but who knows.

  6. I also heard the “buzz” and watched all the take off & landings on Tuesday night! I read on some other boards that there would likely be an increase in air traffic activity this week due to the Obama visit… which obviously no one of “authority” would ever confirm. Grab a beer and head for your balconies to watch!! Thanks for the free Air Show (but not the stupid gridlock traffic) POTUS!!!

  7. I don’t know, I don’t care. I’m getting awfully tired of these choppers constantly hovering nearby. Can’t hear the tv, talk on my phone, and it messes with the tv reception. I hope the next wacko who owns an RPG and decides to use it, makes his way to Echo Park.

  8. *The RPG was a joke by the way. LET’S NOT CALL THE SWAT TEAM OUT!
