ECHO PARK — Police said they have arrested a man after a Metro bus came under fire this afternoon as it traveled along the border of Echo Park and Silver Lake, leaving the driver injured.
The southbound Metro bus was struck by a single gunshot at about 2:50 p.m. near Coronado Street and Bellevue Avenue, according to the L.A. County Sherriff’s Department, which handles security for the Metro system. It’s not known whether the driver, who suffered a minor injury to his left temple, was grazed by a bullet or hit by glass from the shattered windshield.
“The bus operator did not know he was injured until passengers pointed out that he was indeed bleeding from the head,” according to an LASD announcement.
The driver was transported to a hospital for treatment; no passengers were injured.
A 24-year-old Latino male identified by a witness as being involved in the shooting was arrested at about 5:30 p.m. and booked on suspicion of a assault with a deadly weapon.
The bus was transporting passengers on Metro’s 603 line, which travels from the Glendale Galleria to L.A. Trade Tech.
