Woman with rifle surrenders to police in East Hollywood

EAST HOLLYWOOD — Police sealed off a large section of East Hollywood near L.A. City College this afternoon after a woman armed with a rifle said she was contemplating suicide.

The woman, who at one point was seen holding a rifle in the balcony of a home in the 900 block of N. Heliotrope Drive, was taken into custody at about 3:30 p.m. without incident, said Lt. Wes Buhrmester with the Rampart Division. Buhrmester provided a summary’s of this afternoon’s incident:

A tense situation occurred and was resolved a bit ago in the 900 block N. Heliotrope Ave. A female adult phoned 911 at about 2:45 pm, and advised she had five rifles, and was contemplating suicide via the police. Officers responded to the location, a large house, and she was seen walking on a balcony. Officers were able to open a line of communication with her, and she still had contact with the operator from our Communications Division.

At one point, she entered the house, then returned outside. She was holding a rifle, but not pointing or firing it. She then went back inside. After on-and-off dialog, at 3:30 pm, she advised she was putting down the rifle and coming outside to surrender. She held true to her word, and was taken into custody. Luckily, no shots were fired by anyone. As of this time, detectives are determining a course of action, including hospitalization. Because she was reported to have a rifle, a large containment was initiated. It is now being broken down.
