A community garden grows in East L.A.

EAST LOS ANGELES -- Four-year-old Emilio ran back and forth between the water faucet and his garden plot at Saturday’s grand opening of the Eastmont Community Garden. Like a seasoned gardener, he kept busy filling a watering can to quench the dry soil where he’d previously planted strawberries, tomatoes, and chili plants. More so, he proudly pointed to tomatoes already ripening on the vine, as well as the cilantro and carrot seeds he would soon plant.

Large opening night crowds gather at Shepard Fairey’s Subliminal Projects gallery. Taco lovers seemed perpetually lined up outside Guisados. Indie music fans are descending on Club Bahia across the street from the sleek Elysian apartment tower. Now, joining this mix is Esqueleto, an Oakland-based jewelry shop and gallery.

Will the Arroyo Seco flow back to life?

While the L.A. River is poised for a billion-dollar restoration, the nearby Arroyo Seco seems almost forgotten as it runs down a narrow slit along the 110 Freeway through Northeast L.A. But a feasibility study now underway may eventually lead to a restoration of the Arroyo Seco as well.
