Fundraiser launched to rescue a Mount Washington mural

MOUNT WASHINGTON -- Just one eye of a Native American looks out behind the barrage of tagging covering the Southwest Museum Mural on Marmion Way. Artist Daniel Cervantes and a team of volunteers spent about a year working on the nearly 150-foot long mural, which was dedicated in 2004. Now, a fundraiser is being held to raise at least $20,000 to restore and maintain the artwork.

Northeast L.A. students take a walk in the past lane

HIGHLAND PARK -- At Ramona Hall, eighth graders from Arroyo Seco Museum Science Magnet School were practicing their lines and testing their delivering. After all, show time was only days away. While costumes and props were in place, some adrenal jitters needed to be worked out during this rehearsal. The upcoming show, however, was not a theatrical performance, but rather a shared educational experience.

Echo Park’s Cuban Music Festival left without a place to dance

ECHO PARK -- Every May for about the past two decades the Presencia Cubana - aka the Cuban Music Festival - at Echo Park Lake has filled the park with the sights and rhythms of Cuban culture. But not this year. Organizers have cancelled the festival, blaming Councilman Mitch O'Farrell and the Recreation & Parks Department for imposing new regulations that prevent the installation of a dance floor on the grass.
