HIGHLAND PARK — Thursday was cloudy and cool at Dockweiler State Beach. But the unseasonably cool weather did not deter a group of students from Highland Park’s  Buchanan Street Elementary from participating in a beach clean up .

The clean up was part of Kids Ocean Day, which is intended to teach kids about the impact of pollution and litter on the environment, ocean and, in this case, beaches.

An estimated 3,500 students participated in the environmental event that was co-sponsored by the Malibu Foundation for Environmental Education in partnership with several city and state agencies.
