ECHO PARK —  With no shortage of Airbnb options in Echo Park,  is there enough demand for a new motel or hotel? Apparently so.  A four-story, 89-room motel is being proposed to be built next to the 101 Freeway, rising on the site where a giant fire destroyed a commercial building nearly three years ago.

Morgan Legacy LLC is seeking city permission to build a motel that is larger and taller than currently allowed at 1625 Palo Alto Avenue, according a Planning Department summary.

The nearly 50,000-square-foot motel would rise 55-feet high on Palo Alto next to a 101 Freeway onramp. The project would include 53 parking spaces for motor vehicles and 24 bike parking spaces, according to the Planning Department. The project is also seeking a conditional use permit to build a motel within 500 feet of a residential zone.

The summary does not indicate when the owners would expect to start construction, but the project would be the first motel to be constructed in the area in recent years.  The motel would be located near several new large residential projects that are being planned or built on nearby Temple Street.

  1. After some basic research its looks like these are the same folks who own Hollywood Inn Express South on Alvarado. I wonder if the community supports this project or not? Seems like it would be one of the largest developments in Echo Park…..

  2. It’s in a bad spot because it might affect the heavy commute to the entrance of the 101 freeway.
