Highland Park to connect with Councilman Huizar on Facebook

HIGHLAND PARK –– Got a question for your City Council member but don’t want to sit through a long community meeting? The Historic Highland Park Neighborhood Council has got an alternative. Next week the council will host a Q&A with 14th District Councilman Jose Huizar on its Facebook page.

The neighborhood council’s Digital Committee wanted to take advantage of the popularity of Facebook to make it easier for citizens to question local government officials from their living rooms, cafe  or where they can find an Internet connection. Huizar’s office said this is the first time a neighborhood council has held a Q&A with a City Council member.

“We have tasked the Digital and Social Media Committee to look for new and innovative ways to engage our community and make local government more accessible,” said Highland Park council President Monica Alcaraz. “Other neighborhood councils are looking at our strategies of community engagement as a model to better engage their stockholders though social media.”

How is this going to work? Anyone can participate in the Q&A on Monday, Oct. 5 at 7 pm.  However, participants are asked to sign up in advance so they can receive reminders.   The questions must be specifically about Highland Park.  Not all questions may be answered due to time restraints, according to council officials.

“More and more, social media has become the communication device of choice for so many, and I look forward to
continuing an on-going interactive dialogue with Highland Park stakeholders,” Huizar said in a statement.
