Mt. Washington Mid-Century landmark sells for $1.35m; Lincoln Heights artist loft goes for under $500k & more

By JEFFERY MARINO

The Eastside was L.A.’s most competitive housing market in August, with the typical home selling in about two weeks and the majority of homes selling for above the asking price, according to a recent report from Redfin. Prices are still climbing on the Eastside as well. As of August, the median sale price in Highland Park was $592,000. To put this in perspective, it was just $365,000 in August of 2013.

Below are some of the homes that are being fought for by Eastside homebuyers. Among these recently sold homes you’ll find a Spanish-style villa in Eagle Rock that sold for $1,050,000. One of the homes in the Barbara Bestor-designed Blackbirds development of Echo Park just sold for $878,500. Be sure to check out the piece of Mid-Century modern history that sold in Mount Washington for $1,350,000. And lest you thought it impossible to buy a home in L.A. for under half a million dollars, take a look at the cozy Boyle Heights Craftsman and a renovated Lincoln Heights loft.

  1. LA’s street tree situation in general is godawful. Streets that are lucky enough to have mature trees are usually a mish mash of 10 different types and sizes. Outside of the wealthiest neighborhoods it’s hard to find a street lined with beautiful evenly spaced mature SHADE trees like you will find everywhere in the Bay Area or New York. Unfortunately this is another problem the geniuses in the 20th century really screwed us with (like deciding that nobody wants public transportation). If somebody hadn’t spent all the resources planting ridiculous palm trees which offer zero shade, we might be in better shape today.
