Mid Century Atwater Village car wash property goes on the market

Los Feliz Car Wash

Eastside PropertyATWATER VILLAGE — With a row of arrow-shaped fins rising above Los Feliz Boulevard, the Los Feliz Car Wash represents a classic piece of 1960s, roadside architecture. But now it looks like the car wash’s days might be numbered. The approximately 26,000 square-foot property is up for sale and being promoted as a “development site,” according to a listing on LoopNet.

The car wash at Los Feliz and Perlita Avenue occupies a valuable, block-long stretch of Los Feliz Boulevard near the Costco shopping center. The asking price was not disclosed. Says the listing:

The property will be delivered vacant at the close of escrow, making the opportunity perfect for a developer!

Built in 1963, the Los Feliz car wash has been mentioned in some blogs devoted to roadside and Mid Century architecture. A 1965 photo of the Los Feliz Car Wash in all its Googie-like glory was included in a Santa Monica art exhibit.

  1. Maybe they can salvage those fins, and integrate them into the new building… a googie-inspired mixed-use, hehe.

  2. Good bye cool architecture. Hello massive boxy condos. More cars! Yes, more cars, more people! Stop procreating! Too many people on this planet!

Your cool googie architecture was actually born out of car culture.
It was designed as a way to attract more attention & business from people driving.
