Driver sentenced to nine years in prison for fatal Highland Park hit-and-run

HIGHLAND PARK — A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge today sentenced Alexis Virto to nine years in state prison in connection with last’s June fatal hit-and-run of a cyclist on Figueroa Street near near Pasadena Avenue, said the L.A. District Attorney.

Alexis Virto, 22, was speeding northbound during the early morning hours of June 26 when he struck 33-year-old cyclist Jose Luna. One of Luna’s legs was severed during the crash.

Virto drove off from the crash scene with Luna on the hood of the car for about 200 yards, authorities said. Virto was still heavily intoxicated and had windshield debris in his hair when he was apprehended several hours later at his home.

Virto  pleaded no contest last month to one count of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
