ECHO PARK — Police have identified the victim of Friday’s fatal Echo Park shooting as 20-year-old Alex Baires.
Baires was shot at about 8:20 p.m. in front of a small market in the 1800 block of Echo Park Avenue. One LAPD spokesman said Baires, a known Echo Park gang member, was shot three times in the chest.
While Baires is a member of the ExP gang, it’s still not clear if his murder was gang-related, said Detective Lisa Governo with the LAPD Northeast Division. Police do not have a motive for the crime, and no suspects are in custody, she said. It’s not known if Baires was shot from a passing vehicle or up close, she said.
Baires was part of a group of friends and Echo Park gang members that included Michael Robert Hannah, whose body was found about three blocks away on Delta Street after he had been shot, one detective said. The Hannah homicide remains unsolved, Governo said.
Anyone with information about the killing is asked to contact Northeast Division homicide detectives a (323) 344-5744.
