Sheriff investigating death of East L.A. woman; Echo Park area assault leaves man with critical injuries; Oxy students end occupation

  • Homicide detectives with the L.A. County Sheriff”s Department are investigating the death of a woman early this morning in the 400 block of S. Sydney Drive. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. No further details were available. LASD
  • A group of gang members attacked a man and left him with critical injuries after he left a shopping area near Sunset Boulevard and Beaudry Avenue just beyond the eastern edge of Echo Park.  The man, who suffered severe head trauma, was not a gang member, police said. NBC 4
  • Occidental College students ended their week-long occupation of the college’s administration building but vowed to continue to push for more racial justice and diversity on the Eagle Rock campus. The college agreed with most of the student’s demands, including the creation of a black studies program, but rejected the ouster of Occidental President Jonathan Veitch. L.A. Times
  • Heisman Trophy winner Mike Garrett, who left USC’s athletic program in 2010 following NCAA sanctions, has named the athletic director of Cal State L.A. in El Sereno. The 71-year-old Garrett, who grew up in Boyle Heights, replaces Dan Bridges, who retired. L.A. Times
