How not to recycle your Christmas tree

One of the Eastside’s holiday traditions includes the dumping of unwanted Christmas trees on sidewalks, alleys and streets. A few are even set on fire, like the unfortunate tree pictured above in Echo Park (at least it was put in the green bin).  But instead of dumping your tree, the City of L.A. would prefer you recycle it. It’s easy. L.A. Sanitation explains how:

Use the Green Bin

  • Remove decorations and stand
  • Cut tree into pieces; and
  • Place in your green yard trimming bin

Curbside Pick Up

  • Those who are unable to cut or place in the green bin, may leave their tree at the curb on their weekly collection day.

Drop-off your tree

  • Use one of 12 Los Angeles Fire Stations to recycle their trees. In addition, residents can go to six Recreation and Park locations on Sunday, January 3, 2016 from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Go to www.lacitysan.org or call (800) 773-2489 for locations.

Apartment Recycling

  • Residents of multifamily buildings are requested to place their Christmas trees at the curbside on the day of collection by LA Sanitation in their neighborhood. For collection day information, go to www.lacitysan.org or call (800) 773-2489.

Last year the recycled 100,000 trees, which were turned into mulch and compost, according to L.A. Sanitation.

FYI: Holiday wrapping paper, cartons, cardboard, Styrofoam®-like packing material,  plastics and gift boxes should be placed in the blue bin.
