80-year-old Boyle Heights parishioner robbed of $4,100 in church offerings

BOYLE HEIGHTS — Police are asking the public for help to find a suspect who dragged an 80-year-old parishioner across a church parking lot before running off with $4,100 in the weekly offerings.

A surveillance video from The Church of the Assumption  on Blanchard Street shows the suspect, described as a male Hispanic, approach the parishioner from behind as the 80-year-old man walks across the parking lot with a canvas bag filled with the money. The suspect grabs the bag but the parishioner holds on, falling to the ground and dragged across the pavement. The suspect breaks free and then runs into the passenger side of a black sedan, which drives away from the robbery on the morning of January 12.

The victim was treated for his injuries at scene.

“The church’s video cameras captured the suspect arriving and loitering in the church parking lot for around 45 minutes prior to the robbery,” according to an LAPD press release.”A second suspect, who was the getaway driver, is seen acting as a lookout from the opposite side of the parking lot.”

  1. An octogenarian getting violently robbed of $4100 is terrible. Preaching a fairy tale to people to get said $4100 is tragic.

  2. A male Hispanic robbing a helpless man. No way. I’m being facetious.

    • Well you seem like a pretty awful person.

    • “Somebody” apparently unable to connect two simple dots, i.e., Boyle Heights is 95% hispanic. Conversely, the surveillance videos of crimes and burglaries being committed in EP and Silverlake do NOT feature male hispanics. “No Way”? Si Buey!
