Highland Park shooting victim identified

HIGHLAND PARK — The man who was found shot dead in Sycamore Grove Park on Sunday has been identified as 19-year-old Kaelyn Michael Tarin, police said today.

Tarin, who had been living in the park for some time, was found inside a tent where he had been shot multiple times in the torso, said Lou Lenchuk, a homicide detective with the LAPD Northeast Division.  Tarin may have been shot between the early morning and noon, Lenchuk said.  There is no description of the suspect or suspects, he said.

Last July, a male transient was found bludgeoned to death near a pedestrian bridge that crosses over the Arroyo Seco Parkway next to the park.  The suspect in that case has been apprehended, Lenchuk said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Lenchuk or homicide detective Ryan Watterson at 323-561-3321

The Eastsider’s story on Sunday night said the victim was in his 30s and suffered a gunshot wound to the head, according to initial police reports. But police have since provided updated details.

  1. Man that’s messed up. As if this kid didn’t hard enough already.

  2. That is horrible and sad news.

  3. Another homicide non-gang related or hipster related. Who’s there to blame???

    • The city leaders who aren’t doing their job and getting rid of these encampments. Letting the addicted, mentally ill and recently released parolees form their own communities is recipe for disaster.

    • When was there a hipster related homicide?

    • Who’s there to [email protected]
There is a documented corrolation between gangs and homelessness.
Some of the gangs are using some homeless to do their work on their behalf and getting paid with drugs. Most likely this guy didn’t hold to his part of the bargain and got shot…
Who is to blame? @elchicano, well, certainly not the new comers, hipsters..

Lorraine, hmmm how would you know something like that…fishy

        • @stopgentrification.. Yep.. I am super fishy!! I go to all the council meeting because I care about my neighborhood and try to make it better. The LAPD is always there and keep us updated.. Fishy…..

@lorraine do you really believe you learn what’s really going on the streets in those meetings. That’s probably the most naive statement you ever gave. But good for you for attending

How do you know it’s not one of them white drug addicts living in the r.v.s across the street. Drug fiends stick together regardless of race. I don’t need to attend no meeting to know that.

      • Hey. There is nothing you know about what the heck your talking about, stop sayins the gangs, that he didnt hold his part of his bargin you have no clue, so shut up, Where you with the homeless there, no where you there when everyone that said there goodbyes to him and all of them , did you eat with any of them the night he was killed, no you werent, so stop including they use them to steal in there own hood, no I dont think so, and give money for drugs, stop your senseless, it was a act of a random murder, so be it

    • Potential suspects could be a park employee – groundskeeper, maintenance, janitorial.
Someone who is a military veteran with combat service in Iraq, Afghanistan is also potential suspect.
Pay attention for someone living in the neighborhood who demonstrates abusive behavior – towards his spouse, children or animals. Look for the guy who keeps his dogs tied up in the yard.

  4. @ElChicano while I am no “hipster”, everyone knows it is code for “white”.
It has been used on the Eastsider boards by low thinkers for sometime now.
Your lack of reverence for the death of somebody by callously inducing your veiled racist statement is a declaration of your ignorance. The obvious lack of social etiquette is either a sign you have no willingness to learn about the world around you and I pity you.
The funniest thing about statements like yours appearing here is the Eastsider pulls a good amount of its revenue from the advertisement of real estate listing. So you are adding content to the very thing you obviously despise.

I wonder if you were around in the 60’s , 70’s and 80’s when the racial dynamic changed in Highland Park? Were you here when those “white” people left for the lure of suburbs after building beautiful communities here for 100 years.
Maybe you believe Quetzalcoatl himself built Highland Park as a LARaza paradise and it wasn’t just a cheap area where immigrant people could find a place to live in relative proximity to downtown or Pasadena?

Well guess what the same thing happened again, this time a new “others” who found a place that was cheaper than most of LA in close proximity to downtown and Pasadena.
The fact that a business like Huarache Azteca Restaurante, El Fuente, and Antigua thrive, adjust with the time or just have great food prove it has less to do with inequality than it has to do with people like you blaming the global economy for not buying property or educating yourself to put yourself in a position to attain goals that may allow you to succeed.

See it is far better to blame someone else, the system or an entire race for your own shortcomings. You can cut out the whole self realization thing and rest on good ole tried and true hate.
As for the poor young man who was murdered my condolences go out to his parents wherever they may be, no one deserves to murder at any age let alone 19 years old. This is the 3rd murder in 3 years around the homeless camps and I rest that blame toward the elected officials who have tied hands of law enforcement when it comes to removing camps. They have sat on their hands in providing shelter for the homeless.
I wonder if Gil Cedillo is going clean up Sycamore park for 2 days for his Pancho Sanchez concert?( maybe we should erect a memorial during it because it is right on the spot of the murder)

    • Intelligence =1
      ignorant racist = 0

    • Stop gentrification

The word hipsters is used by them as well. So it’s not derogatory at all. If you don’t not correlate hipster with white. Try google, then tell him how many Hispanics and blacks or any minority you see in those images. When you had the white flight, they all left on their own. Nobody was evicting them or made them feel unwanted or in danger, which ever you prefer. Crime is not a result of gentrification. Displacement of families are. The only reason you have a problem is because whether you believe it or not there is racism envolved. Shoot on both sides. All this self righteous shit is bullshit, no one is trying to solve any local social problems whether it be gangs, drugs or the economy. They either want to ship it out some where else,or put them in jail. Life is about changes good or bad… there is a consequence for every action.

      • Stop gentrification

Get it right also the white flight started in the 20’s to 50’s, maybe late 60’s. I doubt you were around as well. They left because of the growing Mexican population not because of cheaper housing. The same racism you had then by parents are not carried out by their children.
