BOYLE HEIGHTS —  When it has come to improving neighborhood streets, the city has focused much of its attention on thoroughfares like Cesar Chavez Avenue and East First Street.  Now, it looks like Whittier Boulevard  may also be getting some help to make it safer, more attractive and pedestrian friendly. But getting this makeover started is going to cost at least $1 million.

The stretch of Whittier Boulevard in Boyle Heights has been relatively neglected compared to sections of the street in neighboring East Los Angeles, where the county has spent heavily on new sidewalks, light fixtures, street furniture  and other improvements near the landmark Whittier arch.

To improve the Whittier corridor through Boyle Heights, Councilman Jose Huizar has proposed spending $1 million in excess bond monies to repair sidewalks and begin the process of a long-term redesign of the busy street between Boyle Avenue on the west and Indiana Street on the east.  A City Council motion introduced by Huizar says:

Aging infrastructure along Whittier Boulevard is in need of repair and many businesses and residents have expressed a desire to improve the street to make it more pedestrian friendly
and safe. It is important for the City to invest in both the short and long term needs of the corridor to ensure that the street continues to thrive … In the long term, the
corridor must be redesigned to make it commuter friendly for all forms of transportation

The $1 million would include funds to hire a consultant to seek additional grants and oversee community outreach.  Huizar’s motion was recently approved by City Council’s Economic Development Committee.

Update: The City Council approved the motion on Jan. 20.

  3. Might want to consider adding parking structures in Boyle Heights for sure. Every family seems to have 3 or more cars. Very densely populated corridor. Not enough parking ever available on residential streets off Whittier, much less on Whittier itself. Have noticed people from out of the neighborhood using residential street as park and ride . They then take the bus. There was a guy also using the street as a used car lot. Lack of parking is bad for businesses. Hope better trash pick up and street sweeping happens.
